Anti-Ageing Skincare Products and Advice

Tina Richards 8 Anti-Ageing SkinTypes

NOTE: Read through the 8 skin types below (click the skintype name), select the skin type that resonates with you most (must say yes to majority of the points) and follow the link to your recommended skin care products.

1. Never-ending Blemish (NB) Tina's skin type!

NB skin in a nutshell:

  • Facial oiliness, recurrent acne breakouts in your teens but often also in your 20s and beyond, may leave acne scars
  • Pigmentation including dark spots, dark patches and freckles (if fair) in areas of sun exposure and dark under eye circles if you have medium to dark toned skin
  • Persistent red or brown marks left behind after an acne blemish, irritation, cut or other skin trauma
  • Some skincare products including makeup can cause irritation - stinging or burning sensation or redness on you face or neck
  • Sunscreens often make your face look shiny and feel greasy and sometimes appear white or purplish (if dark toned)
  • Broken capillaries on cheeks and around wings of nose especially if fair
  • Medium and dark toned NBs tan easily to a perfect bronze and love how a tan conceals skin imperfections (but no more real tans though - right?)

NB Celebrity Skin Spotlight:

Megan Fox, Lindsey Lohan and Victoria Beckham are all likely NBs. Although Victoria's skin may appear in public to have even-tone I have seen dark circles and pigmentation issues in photos where she wasn't wearing any makeup. Dark spots have likely been eradicated by a dermatologist - we know this lady is a perfectionist. Victoria has confessed to having oily and acne prone skin. Both Megan Fox and Lindsey Lohan are likely light NBs with freckles, oily skin and have reportedly suffered from acne.

2. Scarlet Hue Skin Type (SH)

SH skin in a nutshell:

  • Common skin type among those with English, Scottish, Irish or other northern European heritage including Scandinavian and German.
  • Facial oiliness - face can look and feel oily and appear shiny in photos
  • Even toned skin - mostly no brown spots, brown marks or freckles at all (but may have pimples)
  • Commonly intolerant to the sun - don't tan easily, sunburn easily
  • Prone to facial or neck flushing, facial redness, facial rashes or pink scaliness around nose and mouth (peri-oral dermatitis)
  • Susceptible to rosacea or acne breakouts and enlarged pores
  • Many skincare products irritate your skin - sting, burn, redden or cause acne, rosacea breakouts

SH Celebrity Skin Spotlight:

Renee Zellweger, Cameron Diaz and Cynthia Nixon are likely SHs. These actresses have reportedly suffered bouts of rosacea and flushing and appear to have even-toned skin not prone to pigmentation. Cameron Diaz reportedly has also had acne breakouts and it appears in some photos that she has enlarged pores. Apparently she has previously had some sundamage-related-hyperpigmentation due to surfing on Californian beaches, where areas of skin became unevenly darker and for which she needed treatment. However this is different to the classic dark spots, distinct brown patches and/or freckles that are typical of pigmented types eg NBs. Renee's skin appears to be on the oily side as often she appears shiny in photos. Cynthia commented in an interview with Fitness Magazine that she tends to have oily hair which suggests oily skin. Incidentally Cynthia's natural hair colour is flaxen blonde, she first coloured it red for her role as Miranda Hobbes in Sex and the City.

3. Tough Radiant (TR)

TR skin in a nutshell:

  • Most commonly medium and dark toned skin but TRs can also have light skin
  • Facial oiliness - face can look and feel oily and appear shiny in photos but radiant in youth
  • Dark spots and freckles on sun exposed areas
  • Enlarged pores and blackheads
  • Tough resistant skin that can use any skin care products without issue BUT most over-the-counter skincare products are not concentrated enough for your resistant skin
  • Occasional acne breakouts mostly when young due to high oiliness, acne scars
  • Skin tans easily (but no more - right?)

TR Celebrity Skin Spotlight:

I am guessing that Supermodel Giselle Bundchen has TR skin. I've never seen any signs of acne breakouts or acne scars and reportedly has only the occasional pimple, suggesting that she has resistant oily skin. Her face appears well hydrated and smooth in photos no doubt due to slight oiliness and her freckles on areas exposed to the sun are a sure sign of skin prone to pigmentation. With Brazilian genes she tans easily which she wants to avoid to preserve her beautiful skin. Another likely TR is Eva Mendez for the same reasons as Giselle.

4. Beauty Queen (BQ)

BQs skin in a nutshell:

  • Most commonly light and medium toned skin but BQs do also have dark toned skin
  • Smooth hydrated dewy looking skin that is never dry, little need to moisturise
  • Enviable, easy, problem-free skin in youth, few acne breakouts
  • Clear and even-toned skin (mostly no freckles or dark spots)
  • Sometimes face can look shiny in photos and foundation can streak
  • May have enlarged pores and/or blackheads
  • Can use any skincare products without irritation

BQ Celebrity Skin Spotlight:

I am guessing that Jennifer Lopez, Angelina Jolie and Hayden Panettiere have won the skin type lottery and have BQ skin. Smooth, clear, even-toned skin in youth that is very easy and problem-free. The smoothness comes from slightly oily skin which is well hydrated but rarely breaks out because of skin resistance, the even tone because genetically this skintype is not prone to pigmentation issues such as dark spots. Scarlett Johansson may also have BQ skin. Although she has reportedly suffered some acne breakouts they appear to have been relatively minor and infrequent. Neglectful BQs will pay the price with wrinkles and sagging later in life - it is mostly neglectful BQs in their 50s and 60s who seek my advice. If you are a young BQ wear high factor broad spectrum sunscreen every day like Jennifer Lopez to save your beautiful skin.

5. at my Wits Ends (WE)

WE skin in a nutshell:

  • Commonly medium to dark toned skin but WEs can have light skin
  • Dryness, flaking and rough patches of skin that worsen in winter or low-humid conditions eg air conditioning, aeroplane, if dark toned skin can look ashy
  • Desperately need moisturiser but difficulty finding skincare that doesn't cause you irritation - burning, stinging, itching or redness
  • Hyperpigmentation - dark spots, dark under eye circles, darkened eye lids, darkening inside of elbows and back of knees brown patches (melasma) on cheeks, freckles
  • Skin prone to skin redness, flushing , pink scaling patches and broken red capillaries
  • WEs with very dry skin experience itching of face and body and/or eczema (atopic dermatitis)
  • WEs with slightly dry skin may experience acne, rosacea or perioral dermatitis (pink scaling patches around nose and mouth)

WE Celebrity Skin Spotlight:

It is probable that Nicole Kidman is a fair WE type. She has confessed to having dry skin and reportedly has suffered from recurrent eczema. Clearly She had freckles in the 1989 film Cape Fear when her hair was still red (pre Hollywood makeover) confirming she is prone to pigmentation. Catherine Zeta Jones also has suffered with eczema and reportedly has to pile on the moisturiser to keep it at bay. Her skin is also appears to be prone to pigmentation issues. I am guessing the actor Morgan Freeman also has WE skin - prone to pigmentation marks, sensitivity and dryness.

6. Arid & Fragile (AF)

AF skin in a nutshell:

  • Light-toned skin
  • Even-toned skin (mostly no freckles or dark spots)
  • Dry skin prone to flaking and rough patches or scaling patches that worsen in low-humidity climates eg air conditioning, airplane
  • Desperately need moisturiser but difficulty finding skincare that doesn't cause you irritation - burning, stinging, itching or redness
  • Prone to redness, blotches and broken red capillaries
  • AFs with very dry skin are prone to itching and/or eczema (atopic dermatitis)
  • AFs with slightly dry skin are prone to mild acne and rosaeca

AF Celebrity Skin Spotlight:

The singer Adele reportedly suffers with eczema indicating dry sensitive skin and appears to have even-toned skin that is not prone to pigmentation marks (freckles or dark spots).

7. Universally Complacent (UC)

UC skin in a nutshell:

  • Universal skin tones (light, medium and dark)
  • Enviable, easy, problem-free skin in youth, few breakouts, somewhat dry
  • Majority tan easily
  • Freckles and/or dark spots
  • Can easily use skincare products without irritation
  • If you've neglected your skin in youth (poor diet, smoking, lack of exercise, poor sunscreen use) wrinkles and dark spots are now your main concern (eye wrinkles from mid-30s)
  • If you've led healthy lifestyle (healthy diet, smoking avoidance, exercise, daily sunscreen use) you are told you look 5-10 years younger than your actual age and you've minimised dark spots

UC Celebrity Skin Spotlight:

I think Juliana Margulies has UC type skin. Her skin appears dry and resistant as her skin never appeared shiny in early photos and there are no signs of her having acne breakouts in her youth. But I remember her freckles in ER indicating she is definitely prone to pigmentation. Gwyneth Paltrow could also be another UC type. Although her freckles are often now disguised she is clearly prone to freckling on her nose, cheeks and arms. UC skin is quite common among people of Far East Asian descent (WE is the other common type), I strongly suspect Lucy Liu has this skin type.

8. Predominant & Hassle-Free (PH)

PH skin a nutshell:

  • Very common skin type in the UK and US
  • Mostly light toned skin , difficulty tanning , burn easily in sun if unprotected
  • Enviable, easy, problem-free skin in youth, few breakouts, somewhat dry
  • Clear and even-toned skin (no freckles or dark spots)
  • Can easily use skincare products without irritation
  • If you've neglected your skin (poor diet, smoking, lack of exercise and poor sunscreen use) wrinkles are now your main concern (starting with eye crepiness from mid-30s)
  • If you've led healthy lifestyle (healthy diet, smoking avoidance exercise, daily sunscreen use) you are told you look 5-10 years younger than your actual age

Celebrity Skin Spotlight:

I reckon Julie Bowen from the US show Modern Family has PH skin: somewhat dry, even-toned skin that is not prone to pigmentation marks and not prone to acne breakouts in youth, therefore resistant skin. Amanda Seyfried and Cate Blanchett (whose father is American) may also be PH types.
